Volac Whey Nutrition Ltd are market leaders in providing whey ingredient solutions & pioneers in the manufacture of whey proteins and its derivatives.
Optimised were approached by Volac Whey Nutrition Ltd, as they explored methods of decarbonisation to support their net zero ambitions. A key part of this journey was the implementation of renewable technologies and on-site electricity generation to reduce the reliance on grid-import, and hence reducing costs and associated carbon emissions.
Felinfach
The manufacturing site in Felinfach, is in a prime location to support renewable generation assets due to available space, site location and long-term position in the business growth plan. This project has evaluated a variety of renewable technologies, to determine at a high-level, what other applications could work alongside the existing Biomass Plant and an Anaerobic Digestor (AD Plant) that the company are currently investigating, to support the overall site decarbonisation plans.
Solar photovoltaic systems and wind generation have been deemed suitable in assisting generating the required volume of on-site electricity generation.
A non-intrusive study was conducted across the whole of the manufacturing site and wider estate to identify any potential limitations to installing these renewable technologies.
The main site houses 4 dryers each of varying height, these are the largest energy consumers and unfortunately cause a significant amount of shading on the surrounding buildings, hereby restricting the optimal solar photovoltaic positions.
The onsite Biomass CHP can currently provide 60% of the overall energy required by the main operating site, although the presence of a large parasitic load raises a challenge. There will also be an amount of blinding of any roof mounted assets due to the CHP process exhausts which will cause increased cleaning.
The South Park site has an independent electricity supply and a large solar array. However, at the time there was no connection between the south park site and the other main site.
The north field has been designated as an area to grow trees to offset the wood being consumed by the biomass CHP system, this is beneficial but challenging as it limits the accessibility of the field for renewables.
As part of a feasibility study Optimised achieved the following actions:
Assessed the sites energy profile to understand the maximum demand and typical consumption.
Conducted a site visit to understand the site limitations and potential for renewables installation
Considered all available renewable technologies for the site and discounted ineligible ones
Proposed renewable solutions to provide 100% of the remaining electricity consumption onsite.
The most successful decarbonisation projects are planned and executed as an integrated solution, this can prevent projects overlapping or clashing, which may lead to additional costs expenditure or impact to the programme’s success.
In addition to on-site generation assets, Optimised identified the potential for Volac to introduce a heat pump into the VREL Biomass LTHW (Low Temperature Heating Water) line. Hereby reducing the return water temperature and assisting with the electrical generation achieved by the Rankine Cycle within the VREL Biomass Plant. This further reduces the reliance on imported grid-electricity.
A detailed advisory report was developed detailing a technical appraisal of further possible on-site generation technologies. This included a business case for each generation scenario, 3 in total, detailing the cost of implementation, estimated annual energy yields and the associated energy and carbon savings.
A combination of solar and wind turbine onsite generation was identified and modelled by Optimised, to support electricity generated through utlisation of gas generated by an AD plant and maximizing the existing Biomass electrical generation. A proposed solar PV system could be installed in areas already owned by the company and could equate to 18% of the remaining externally supplied consumption onsite, with any remaining electricity demand being met by the installation of 1MW wind turbines.
This combined generation approach could realise a multi-million GBP annual cost saving with an annual energy saving of circa 19K
MWh/year, and an annual carbon emission reduction of circa 3.6K tonnes, through reduction in reliance on externally supplied energy. A detailed report of recommendations for Solar and wind generation was issued, which includes the next steps in developing the long-term renewable strategy at the site, liaising with local planning authority, and undertaking a review of on-site and off-site constraints for planning permission and DNO connection agreements.
Volac International Ltd engaged with Optimised in 2022 and has actively worked with them on various projects across the wider Volac business, looking at ways to reduce energy usage and carbon emissions. These discussions led to this Renewable Energy Study being completed at our large manufacturing site in Felinfach, West Wales. This site is owned and operated by Volac Whey Nutrition Ltd and shows how the relationship has grown from its initial beginnings.
